About
Josef Ginnerskov is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Analytical Sociology (IAS), Linköping University, affiliated with the Swedish Excellence Centre for Computational Social Science (SweCSS) and the Linköping Excellence Centre in Analytical Sociology (LECAS). He studies why some ways of understanding society become self-evident while others disappear: which concepts, methods and theoretical frameworks gain authority in the social sciences, and which are marginalised.
His work brings sociological theory into dialogue with philosophy of science and computational approaches to social inquiry. Combining conceptual analysis and formal modelling with large-scale text analysis, he examines how disciplinary structures, peer relations and intellectual commitments shape standards of explanation, and traces how ideas move between research fields and public debate. The aim is a more reflexive understanding of how social-scientific knowledge is produced.
He holds a PhD in sociology from Uppsala University. His dissertation, Quest for Sociology, analysed Swedish doctoral theses from 1980 to 2019 and found that the discipline has evolved towards increasing specialisation rather than fragmentation. It received the Swedish Sociological Association's award for the best doctoral thesis in sociology 2024–2025.
Before academia caught up with him, he wrote songs. A few became records, now enjoying quiet retirement in bargain bins in the far north of Sweden.
